Obama Demagogues Private Enterprise

August 18th, 2010

Last weekend, President Obama pandered for votes by trashing Social Security privatization.  “I’d have thought that debate would’ve been put to rest once and for all by the financial crisis we’ve just experienced,” Obama said. “(N)o one would want to place bets with Social Security on Wall Street”. ‘Nativist Impulse’ Behind Conservative Opposition to Ground Zero Mosque

August 16th, 2010

New Times political columnist Matt Bai is the political version of economics writer David Leonhardt: Both are neoliberal commentators (slightly to the right of the paper’s reporters) who serve as the paper’s conscience on their chosen issues. The front of the Sunday Week in Review featured Bai’s latest “Political Times” column, “I’m American. And You?” where Bai attacked as “nativist impulse” two conservative proposals: A push by some Republican lawmakers to repeal the 14th amendment, giving citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil; and conservative opposition to building a mosque near Ground Zero. August 16th, 2010

‘Let me be clear,” Pres. Barack Obama said at Friday night’s iftar dinner at the White House before making what nearly everyone took to be a deeply felt endorsement of the Ground Zero mosque. “Obama Strongly Backs Islam Center Near 9/11 Site,” was the New York Times headline. Sacrilege at Ground Zero

August 13th, 2010

A place is made sacred by a widespread belief that it was visited by the miraculous or the transcendent (Lourdes, the Temple Mount), by the presence there once of great nobility and sacrifice (Gettysburg), or by the blood of martyrs and the indescribable suffering of the innocent (Auschwitz). Bill Weir, ABC’s New Nightline Host: A Profile in Bias

August 11th, 2010

ABC’s Bill Weir, the former co-host of weekend Good Morning America, debuted on Monday as the new co-anchor of Nightline. ABC President David Westin lauded Weir in July for conducting “some of our most innovative reporting.” But, he may be better known for standard liberal bias, such as hyperbolically asserting during Barack Obama’s inauguration: “From above, even the seagulls must have been awed by the blanket of humanity.” Read the rest of this entry »

Confirmed: State Dept. Sending Ground Zero Mosque Imam on Middle East Junket : Your tax dollars at work

August 11th, 2010

Claudia Rosett was first to report on Friday that Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the man spearheading the Ground Zero Mosque initiative, is about to take a month-long trip through the Middle East sponsored by the U.S. government:  Ultimately, in response to repeated questions, a member of Rauf’s New York Cordoba Initiative foundation e-mailed me Friday, saying that Rauf’s trip to the Middle East, “in the near future,” will be hosted by the U.S. government as part of an outreach program to “bring the message of moderation, peace and understanding.” Read the rest of this entry »

The U.N. Human-Rights Sham : It’s time for America to get off the fence

August 9th, 2010

When President Obama took over from George W. Bush, many European diplomats and human-rights activists were energized. They hoped the so-called Obama effect would lead to America’s championing a new golden era for international human rights as it re-engaged with the United Nations and brought obstructionist countries —supposedly alienated by the Bush administration’s arrogance — back to the path of progress. But these idealists have had a rude awakening: Under Obama, things have taken a turn for the worse. Read the rest of this entry »

Far-Left Terrorist Helpers Just ‘Human Rights Lawyers’ at the NYT

August 5th, 2010

Two left-wing groups are suing the government for the right to defend Anwar al-Awlaki, the Muslim cleric who the government says ordered the foiled Christmas Day bombing of a Detroit-bound airliner. Awlaki also exchanged emails with Major Nidal Hasan, the Army psychiatrist who killed 13 people at Fort Hood in Texas. On Wednesday, legal reporter Charlie Savage reported “Lawyers Seeking to Take Up Terror Suspect’s Legal Case Sue U.S. for Access.”

Time for Tax Cuts : What ever happened to “bold, persistent experimentation”?

August 5th, 2010

The economic recovery, to the extent there’s been one, has stalled. Unemployment remains stubbornly above 9 percent and may go higher. The housing crisis endures. What is President Obama’s remedy? More jobless benefits, more money for governors to pay Medicaid bills, more funds for teachers and state and local government jobs. In other words, more of the same. Read the rest of this entry »
